It is with great sadness that we have to announce the death of our dear friend and colleague, Iztok Žun. He was Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Ljubljana and Head of the Laboratory for Fluid Dynamics and Thermodynamics. He has been lecturer at CISM courses and since 2012 he was member of our Scientific Council.

Professor Žun was at the University of Ljubljana since 1987. He has been since then strongly committed to a number of activities in Multiphase Flow, being c-chairman of the European-Japanese Two Phase Flow Group and c-chairman of the Virtual International Research Institute of Two-Phase Flow and Heat Transfer. He was the Assembly Officer of the World Conferences on Experimental Heat Transfer, Fluid Mechanics, and Thermodynamics, and member of the Eurotherm Committee, and of the Slovene Engineering Academy.

In his PhD in 1976, Professor Žun was the first to show how transverse lift force and bubble dispersion act on bubbles in turbulent liquid flow causing either wall void peaking or void coring flow regimes. He has authored or hundreds of journal and conference papers and was regularly invited to deliver lectures at universities, conferences, and in the industry all over the world. Professor Žun was the founder of the European-Japanese Two-Phase Flow Group which had its inaugural meeting in 1998 in his home country Slovenia. He was a recipient of the JSMF 2003 Award given by the Japanese Society for Multiphase Flow and was awarded in Slovenia the 1999 Zois Certificate of Recognition for significant achievements in scientific, research and development activities in relation to complex two phase flow.

Our good friend Professor Iztok Žun passed away on Saturday, October 22nd, 2016. He had been ill for several years. He was an excellent scientist, a good friend and a genuine gentleman. His dedication to the community of multiphase flow was extraordinary. In our Scientific Council he was active in bringing Slovenia closer to CISM and also in providing insights and good advice for the activities of CISM in Fluid Mechanics.

As many of his friends and colleagues, I remember him last at our ICMF conference in Firenze.
Personally, I am indebted to him for his good advices and help with his strategic vision and good example.

He bravely fought his illness always with a smile.
